A salute of 21 guns and the unfurling of the Indian National Flag by the first President Dr. Rajendra Prasad heralded the historic birth of the Indian Republic on the 26th of January in the year 1950. Thereafter, the day was decreed to be a national holiday and, thus, was recognised as the Republic Day of India. 2016 shall witness the 67th Republic Day of India.
